CHESSED REQUIREMENTS 2025-26

The Chesed Program at Ohr HaTorah strives to encourage our students to participate in community service with the hope of creating a love of helping others. One of our core values is caring community. As such, we are requiring that all students achieve a minimum of (non-paid) 20 hours of community service before the end of the 2025-2026 school year.

DETAILS / REQUIREMENTS

1. 20 Hours of community service hours MUST be completed before June 5, 2026.

2. Fulfillment, or lack thereof, of the chesed requirements will be part of your final transcript.

3. Only the time spent on performing the community service will count towards the requirements. Travel to and from a chesed opportunity does not count as hours of community service.

4. Chesed hours completed beyond the 10 hour requirement, do not roll over to a future school year’s requirement. Students may not receive payment for their services. Donations made in lieu of volunteering for chesed hours will not be accepted.

5. Students can volunteer at any communal non-profit Jewish or general
organization. Some examples of acceptable community service facilities are hospitals, synagogues, senior living facilities, and charitable organizations.
Attached is a list of places where you may be interested in volunteering.

6. If you would like to assist an individual, they (or their family member) must submit a written request for approval before any community service is performed. Requests sent in retroactively will not count towards the requirements.

7. Requirements cannot be fulfilled with hours served as part of a camp, learning, or travel program.

8. Boys who lain on Shabbat and Yom Tov will receive a maximum of 30 minutes of chesed hours per aliyah. No more than 5 hours can be accrued for laining on Shabbat or Yom Tov.
